Now, a new recall on pepperoni has been issued for Bacillus cereus (B. cereus) contamination. Smithfield Packaged Meats, aka Margherita Meats, has recalled10,990 pounds of ready-to-eat pepperoni products, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced on December 14.
While we were reading we ran into the query “Can pepperoni be eaten raw?”.
The most frequent answer is; You can eat pepperoni raw. This is safe because the meat is cured and fermented killing any bacteria that may have contaminated it. Although pepperoni is usually topping pizzas which are then cooked, it is okay to eat the slices from the bag alone or in a sandwich. Now, even though you can eat pepperoni raw doesn’t mean you should eat a lot of it.
Is there a recall on Margherita pepperoni?
Following a recall in early December for 2.3 million pounds of ham and pepperoni products from Alexander & Hornung due to Listeria contamination, Smithfield Packaged Meats Corp. ‘s Margherita Meats has now recalled a series of pepperoni products due to a possible toxin-producing microorganism.
How many ham and pepperoni products have been recalled?
The original recall, issued December 5, was for approximately 2,320,774 pounds of products, but the recall was expanded last week to include more products. Alexander & Hornung now estimates the recall is for 2,320,774 pounds of fully cooked ham and pepperoni products.

Let us dig a little deeper. a recall of fully cooked ham and pepperoni products shipped to retail stores nationwide has ballooned to more than 2.3 million pounds that may be contaminated with listeria — 10 times more than first announced.
